DNS basics every business owner should understand

DNS translates your domain name to servers. Small mistakes create email outages or phantom “site down” events.

Apex records (@), subdomains (www, mail, portal), and TTL values affect how quickly changes propagate. Lower TTL before planned migrations; raise it afterward for stability.

Keep registrar access protected with MFA. Losing the registrar account is harder to recover from than most hosting problems.

Document who holds DNS, who holds email MX records, and who approves changes—especially when agencies rotate.
